Vamos a la playa – chiringuito style!

Vamos a la playa – chiringuito style!

You might have tried paella, and you’ve probably drank sangria – but there’s a lot more to Spanish beach culture than most tourists realise! If you want to add a little local touch to your summer holiday in the Iberian peninsula this year, don’t miss out on ByHours tips.

Everyone who knows Spain knows its beaches – no matter which coast you visit, you’re guaranteed to find soft sand and sparkling blue sea! To give your beach holiday a more authentic touch this year, whether you’re in the Balearics, Costa Brava or the Costa del Sol, check out a chiringuito. You might not have heard the word before, but if you’ve been to Spain no doubt you’ll recognise what they are…

Yep, it’s a beach bar! But these aren’t just any old beach bars – in the same way that beach huts are quintessentially British, chiringuitos are as Spanish as you can get. You won’t find bars like these anywhere else. They’re full of unique touches which make them – well, super chiringuito-y!

First of all, the food in chiringuitos is better than a beach bar in any other part of the world! Enjoy delicious tapas made to traditional recipes, like patatas bravas and pan con tomate, and plates of pescaito frito – fried fish caught fresh and cooked that day! Enjoy with a fresh squeeze of lemon.

Wash down your tapas with a caña, a small beer. Why not try some of the local varieties, like Estrella in Barcelona or Cruzcampo in Andalucia? Or if you fancy something sweeter, order a jar of fruity sangria to share, or perhaps a glass of tinto de verano. This ‘summer wine’ is made with red wine and lemonade, plus ice to make it super frescito (fresh!) and keep you cool. For ultimate freshness, try a mojito too – made with lime, mint, sugar and rum straight from Cuba, like the name chiringuito itself!

So, are you ready to spend your holiday with a mojito in one hand and a forkful of fresh fish in the other, salt in your hair and sand between your toes watching the sun go down? Of course you are, and the only place you can do so is in Spain’s best chiringuitos! We’ve found some of the best for you – the rest are for you to discover!
