MARCH 8: 3 VERY INSPIRING ‘FIRST TIMES’ TRAVEL WOMEN

international-women-day

The International Day of Working Women is not a randomly chosen date without any meaning, but it has a history behind that many do not know. Since March 1857, women who worked in the textile industry began to demonstrate for their working conditions, under the motto “Bread and roses!”. They were recurring protests year after year in America, which gradually spread throughout the world.

The most climactic point to proclaim this day was when, in March 1908, the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in New York burned down due to its poor conditions, and its more than 146 workers died, of whom the vast majority were women (120) . The catastrophe caused the US labor law to be modified, regulating the conditions of women. At that time, the German Clara Zetkin proposed that March 8 be established as International Women’s Day, during the International Congress of Socialist Women. Thus, it was decided to pay tribute to women, once again claiming their rights to achieve full equality in society, both in the workplace and in social coexistence.

The inequality, which still exists today, has been changing and decreasing over the years, although unfortunately there is still a long way to go. Achieving gender equality between men and women is everyone’s job, and a primary objective of the United Nations, which aims to achieve a 100% equal society by 2030.

Throughout history, the female gender has been making goals and great steps that have helped progress, generating actions with great changes.

At BYHOURS we believe in talent, charisma and equality of people above all else. So this time, we have collected some of the most important women in history in the travel industry. Those who took a step forward to change the unjust acts of society and be an inspiration to future generations, revolutionizing the world and facing all those who were denied the opportunity to be women.

Do you want to know a little more about the women who have helped us get to this day?

  1. Elizabeth Jane Cochran: Known for her alter ego Nellie Bly, she was a journalist for The New York World, where she had to publish successful articles without being able to say that she was a woman. In 1888, she proposed to her publisher to go around the world inspired by Jules Verne’s book, but wanting to exceed his 80-day record. He denied her the possibility of seeing her incapacitated as a woman and going alone. Seventy-two days later, she had traveled the world, being the first woman to sail alone, breaking a world record and proving that she had the same possibilities as any other person of the opposite sex.

  1. Amelia Earhart: the first female pilot to fly over the Atlantic Ocean alone. Her passion peaked in 1929, she had once been a volunteer in Toronto during World War 1. There he discovered aviation, and years later he dared to fly a biplane at an air show in Long Beach. She received pilot classes from the hand of another pioneer woman, Neta Snook, both being part of the group of the only 15 female pilots in the world. In 1937 it disappeared during a flight through the central Pacific Ocean.

  1. Valentina Tereshkova: she was the first woman in history to travel to space, and the only woman to do so alone in 1963. Chosen from more than four hundred applicants and five finalists to pilot Vostok 6, her participation was for a study where The aim was to answer whether women had the same physical and mental resistance as men in space. After three days of study, the answer was completely affirmative, representing a great advance for the consideration of the female gender.

Being part of the leadership and breaking molds, like BYHOURS being the first micro-stay platform, is a responsibility in society. Examples like those of these three women motivate us every day to continue fighting so that women occupy the place they deserve in society.

And to you, which is the woman that inspires you the most in your life?

4 PLACES TO WORK ‘FROM HOME’ AWAY FROM HOME

work-from-home

The freedom of working remotely is said to be the dream of any office pawn, but those who’ve achieved it know that remote work can still have certain drawbacks when working from home, for instance, feeling: lonely, bored, distracted, enclosed…

The constant temptation of Netflix, the fridge, and napping, it can not only be difficult to focus at home but also it can drive you crazy to work and live in the same space 24/7.

However, remote work is proven to increase workers´productivity, efficiency, lower stress and bost moral. There are statistics showing that 60 to 80 % of remote workers are more engaged, due to being in a maximum productivity atmosphere as well as just being overall happier. The Pros of remote work may outweigh the Cons: flexibility, control, more freedom, autonomy, better time-managment, a chance to meet people outside your industry.

Our advice then to make the most of “work from home”? Switch it up! Get out of the house, work remote from different locations. It’s super important to switch up locations, have a bit of human interaction, but the most important thing is to feel comfortable and at ease to get the most work done. The answer is to explore a new workspace that helps you be more productive. We propose 4 places to work in your local city or when you travel, all with wifi, cheap coffee and a table to work on.

COWORKING SPACE

The most profesh option but pricey. If you are willing to pay for a work space coworking spaces are a great option for freelancers and remote workers.

Websites such as Coworkers  and apps such as WorkHardAnywhere (WHA) not only show the cloest coworking spaces to you but also review the spaces. Perhpas if you prefer to work in a different enevironment to your living room or bedroom its worth the extra bucks, especially if you want to have meetings or meet new people.

If you travel a lot interntational ones such as WeWork could be a great option for you, they offer what they call a We Membership. With this you don’t get your own office or desk. Instead, you get access to any available desk in the common area at a variety of locations. This isn’t as convenient as a dedicated workspace, but it’s a lot cheaper. Plus, your membership still comes with unlimited free coffee (and beer).

COFFE SHOPS

Coffee shops have become the go-to spot for remote work. Coffe shops such as the standard Starbucks, Costa Coffe… are somewhat of a safe bet. However, the problem is, everybody works from coffee shop, it can be crowded, loud, with spotty wifi, and you have to pay for, most of time, overpriced coffe.

Our advice? Try out independent (probably better known as hipster) coffe shops. Cool art one the walls? Check. Plants? Check. Cool lamps? Check. They are not only perfect to post on instagram but also have superb wifi most of the time.

At least you feel like you are enjoying a new, nearly social, experience, while working.

HOTELS

Hotels? Yep, hotels! Hotels are a perfect place to work! With loads of different areas to work from: lobbys, business centers, restaurants, bars, cafes, terraces, rooms…

So there are various options when it comes to working from a hotel ,you could use the lobby for absolutely free, the cafe / restaurant / bar / terrace at the cost of a coffe or beer, Hotel lobbies or common spaces are a great place to get serious work done away from the home office. But you might feel a bit shady hanging around a hotel without being a guest.

Therefore, if you want to feel more professional you could book a microstay, a room for 3 hous or 6 hours to get some meaningful work done, make a call or hold a meeting.

BYHOURS hotel microstays give more privacy and are also the perfect excuse to enjoy the comfort of a hotel and get work done at the same time. A room for 3 hours could cost as little as 20 euros or less.

Additionally, many hotels now also offer business meeting rooms and business centres. You can also print, use the wifi, bluetooth and other servies from here.

MUSEUMS

A good life hack is to know is that museums: art museums, history museums, science museums… are usually free, have excellent wifi and have a ´quiet area´designated for reading, studying and working. They also have cafeterias and coffe shops where you can work home, get snacks and coffe or take a break.

Take a break from work with a walk around the museum, this could also be a great way to get the creative juices flowing and inspire your work.

We hope we have inspired you to find the best place for you when you go to work outside the office. You’ve already seen that there are plenty of possibilities.
